
Domas KAUNAS
A Samogitian who grew up in Lithuania Minor. Book Scientist. He graduated from Vilnius University (1975), teaches there, Chairman of the Book Science Department of the Communication Faculty, Professor (1993).
In 1992-95, chairman of the Lithuanian Society of Librarians; since 1989, assistant chairman of the Lithuanian Book Society; in 1993-95, chairman of the Martynas Mažvydas Book Lovers Club; since 1993, member of the National
Council of the International Book Publishing Project "Bibliotheca Baltica"; since 1995, secretary of the State Commission for the Commemoration of the 450th Anniversary of the First Lithuanian Book; in 1978-90, executive secretary of the scholarly work "Knygotyra"; since 1990, editor-in-chief. Chairman of the editorial board of the Book Science Encyclopedic Dictionary (1997). Editor-in-chief ot the YEAR OF THE LITHUANIAN BOOK. Expert member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (1996). He works mainly in the field of book history. He has about 100 scholarly publications in Lithuanian and other languages. He has published these books (in Lithuanian): "From Lithuanian Book History - The Lithuanian Book in the Klaipėda Region Before 1919" (1986), "The Presses of Lithuania Minor, 1524-1940" (1987), "The Libraries of Lithuania Minor (Before 1940)" (1987), "The Forerunner of Lithuanian Periodicals" (1991), "The Bookstores of Lithuania Minor" (1992), "The Book Lovers of the Land of Donelaitis" (1993), "One of the People of the Newspaper Aušra: Jurgis Mikšas, Founder of the Press of the National Rebirth" (1996); "The Book of Lithuania Minor: The Development of the Lithuanian Book, 1547-1940" (1996), "The Woman of Klaipėda" (1997); he was co-author of the monograph "The Lithuanian Book" (1996). He compiled and edited an anthology of the Lithuanian poetry of Lithuania Minor, "Like a Mighty Oak on the Nemunas" (1986). Domas Kaunas was awarded the 1994 Science Prize of the Lithuanian Republic for his work on the history of the Lithuanian press of Lithuania Minor. In 1995 his manuscript "The Book of Lithuania Minor, 1547-1940" was awarded the Dr. Vydūnas Prize of the Lithuania Minor Fund (Canada); he won the Ieva Simonaitytė Literary Prize (1998).
