- International Conference of Book Science in
Vilnius, Lithuania (September 24-28, 1997; Vilnius University) This conference to
commemorate the 450th anniversary of the first Lithuanian book was held by the Department
of Book Science of Vilnius University. Discussions included current problems in book
science, ties between Lithuanian publishing and that of neighboring countries, the
interaction between old and new books, and trends and prospects in the book trade.
- The Commemoration of the 450th Anniversary of
the Lithuanian Book in London, England (June 26, 1997; Concert Hall of the
Polish Embassy) This commemoration was organized by the Lithuanian Embassy and the
British-Lithuanian Society. The program included an address by poet Kornelijus Platelis,
poetry read by Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė, and a recital by pianist Petras Geniušas.
- The Commemoration of the Jubilee of the First
Lithuanian Book in Washington, DC, USA (June 20, 1997; Library of Congress) This
commemoration was organized by the Library of Congress and the Lithuanian Embassy. The
main paper was read by Professor Vytautas Landsbergis, the Chairman of the Lithuanian
Seimas. On this occasion there was a special exhibit of Lithuanian publications (about
20,000 items) as well as a smaller exhibit of Lithuanian periodicals received by the
Library of Congress.
- The Anniversary of the First Lithuanian Book
Commemorated in New York (April 8, 1997; New York Public Library) This
commemoration was organized by the Lithuanian Consulate and the New York District
Committee of the Lithuanian Community. Participants included members of the Lithuanian
Community of the USA, American scholars of Baltic linguistics, and diplomats residing in
New York. The main paper about the personality of M. Mažvydas and his books was read by
Professor Elona Vaisnys. There was an exhibit of old Baltic publications.
- A Photographic Exhibition on the State of the Heritage
of Lithuania Minor (February 28, 1997; editorial office of the newspaper "Mokslo
Lietuva" ["Scientific Lithuania"] in Vilnius) "The Exhibition That
UNESCO Does Not Know About" is described by Jurgis Reidys in the newspaper
"Lietuvos Aidas" (March 22, 1997). These photographs capture the remains of
buildings and cemeteries, the ruins of castles, estates, and churches, and places
reminiscent of M. Mažvydas in the parish at Ragainė in Lithuania Minor. This unique
photo collection was created by the architects Marija and Martynas Purvinas.
- An Exhibition of Trademarks by Professor Albertas
Gurskas, the Creator of the Logo for the 450th Anniversary of the Lithuanian Book
(exhibited in home page Year of the Lithuanian Book). Exhibited are
trademarks created during 1971-1996 by A. Gurskas, the Head of the Graphics
Department of the Vilnius Academy of Art.
- An Exhibition "The First Lithuanian
Book: Cultural Context and Tradition" (January 8 - August 31, 1997;
Vilnius University Library) The most important exhibition devoted to the jubilee of the
Lithuanian book. On display are the Catechism of M. Mažvydas and the first texts in
Lithuanian. The panorama of 16th-century cultural life in Prussia and the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania is revealed as well as the tradition of Lithuanian publishing after M. Mažvydas
in the 16th-18th centuries.
- An International Bookplate Exhibition
Devoted to the 450th Anniversary of the First Lithuanian Book (January 8-25, 1997;
Akademija Gallery in Vilnius)
- Mažvydas Readings 1997 (January 8-9, 1997;
Conference Hall of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library in Vilnius, Gedimino pr. 51)
The Martynas Mažvydas National Library and the Lithuanian Historical Institute invite the
public to attend their Ninth Conference on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the
publication of the first Lithuanian book
- A Conference "The Lithuanian Language:
Researchers and Research" (October 23-24, 1996; Lithuanian Language Institute)
This conference is dedicated to the commemoration of the 450th Anniversary of the first
Lithuanian book - the Catechism by Martynas Mažvydas.
- A Mobile Exhibition of Rare Books (May
6, 1996 - August 31, 1997; throughout Lithuania via public libraries) This exhibition was
prepared using the Rare Book Department collection of the Vilnius University Library.
